TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts women's soccer team rebounded from a tough loss on Friday night at SMU as they picked up their first win of the season on Sunday over Rogers State at home, 2-0.
In front of a good Sunday evening crowd at the Case Soccer Complex, the Golden Eagles controlled the ball most of the contest, outshooting the Hillcats, 23-6. Of the 23 shots ORU took, 10 of them were on goal, to just one on goal from the Hillcats.
Both of the Golden Eagle goals came in much of the same fashion.
The first goal came just over 18 minutes into the contest. Ashley Martin crossed the ball into the box from about 35 yards out on the left side of the pitch, setting up a header from Kayla Keller that was saved by the Hillcat keeper. However, Megan Giles was in the right place for the rebound, putting the ball in net for her first goal of the season.
It was almost the same story in the 55th minute as Leah Bickers sent the ball into the box from the right side, setting up another Martin header that was knocked down by the RSU keeper, Jordan Harris. This time Keller was ready for the rebound, placing the ball the bottom left corner of the goal, her first of the season.
Keller ended up with three shots on goal for the Golden Eagles and Giles added another to go with her goal. Others getting a look at goal for the Golden Eagles include Kayla Nsien, Jennifer Abernathy, Shelbi Lousch, Jordan Parsons and Whitney Booth.
After a 12 save performance on Friday night at SMU, Helen Erb got some rest, allowing Maddie Rhodes to pick up her first start of the season in goal. She was credited with a save midway through the second stanza on a shot by Taylor Halford.
The Golden Eagles return to the pitch at home at 7 p.m. on Friday night in the first of two home matches this season against Northwestern State (La.). The match was originally scheduled as a non-conference date before the two teams became members of the same conference.
The second of the two matches will be a Southland contest at the Case Soccer Complex on Oct. 5.
