Rogers, Sandoval lead menís soccer past Air Force
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Craig Rogers picks up his second goal of the season in a hotly contested match at Air Force on Friday night, giving the Oral Roberts men's soccer team its first victory of the season, 1-0.
Rogers capitalized on a loose ball just outside the penalty box, booting the ball from 22 yards out with his left foot to close the game.
In his first start between the posts in his college career, and his first action of the season, sophomore keeper Isaac Sandoval sent back 11 Air Force shots.
The Golden Eagles offensive entered the locker room at halftime, keeping the Falcons close to their vest, taking four shots in the first 45 minutes, three of which were looks at goal.
Gerardo Salas gave the Golden Eagles their first opportunity of the half in the 7th minute of action that was knocked down by the Air Force keeper, Matt Underwood. As the two squads battled back and forth, John David James and Tom Adams each had looks at the net but to no avail.
Sandoval picked up five of his saves in the second half as the Falcons rattled off 15 total shots in the period. Salas had his second opportunity to put the Golden Eagles up in the 53rd minute, but Underwood closed the chance with a save, much like in the first half.
The Golden Eagles (1-5) hope to make it a streak on Sunday afternoon in the "Mile High City" as they take on Denver. The match against the Pioneers is set to begin at 1 p.m. local time.
