ORU Sweeps Nicholls for Second Straight Win
ORU (6-9, 2-2 Southland Conference) featured a balanced all-around attack. Tatum Fredeen and Sheina Fernandes each posted 11 kills, with Fernandes hitting .667, and Laura Taylor had 29 set assists. Bruna Silva and Luara Rosa each tallied 14 digs on the defensive end, while Fernandes added three blocks.
The Colonels (5-8, 2-2 SLC) hit just .068 as a team. Jessica Addicks had a team-high seven kills, and Jeanne Logarbo led NSU with 11 digs.
ORU took control of the opening set with an early 9-1 run. Fredeen launched back-to-back kills to start the run and ended the rally with another blast to give the Golden Eagles a 10-5 lead. They went on to win the set, 25-17.
The home team scored the first seven points of the second set, with Kylie Johnson notching three kills over the stretch. Later, a 5-0 run on the strength of Rosa and Fredeen kills propelled ORU to a 16-4 lead, and Shelby Robb smacked kills on the final two points to clinch a 25-7 win.
ORU took control of the third set with a 4-0 run, punctuated by a Johnson service ace, to take a 12-10 lead. Later Rosa added two kills as part of another 4-0 run that finished with ORU ahead, 17-13. The Golden Eagles scored the final three points of the match and won the last set, 25-16.
The comfortable margin allowed Sheera Sirola to cycle many fresh faces into the match, and the results were outstanding. In her first extended action of the season, Robb posted four kills and a dig, while freshman Jovana Poljasevic notched two kills and a set assist in her first match in front of the ORU home crowd.
ORU is now 3-0 all-time against Nicholls.
Sirola’s squad returns to the court on Thursday night, when they face Stephen F. Austin. Match time in Nacogdoches, Texas is set for 6:30 pm.
