Ladyjacks Top ORU in Three Sets
The Ladyjacks (14-3, 5-0 SLC) won three tight sets by scores of 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22.
Tatum Fredeen led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills, while Bruna Silva and Sheina Fernandes tallied 11 digs each. Jessica Pancratz turned in a strong effort at the net with five blocks (one solo), and Laura Taylor added 29 set assists.
Reigning SLC Offensive Player of the Week Jill Ivy led SFA with 14 kills, and libero Madison Hanlan collected 21 digs.
ORU outhit the Ladyjacks, .152 with .142, but they committed 11 service errors and allowed five service aces.
The opening set was extremely tight, with neither team leading by more than three points. ORU scored three straight, highlighted by a Fredeen kill, to take a 16-14 lead, and they tied the set at 23 with another three-point run. But SFA scored the final two points of the set to win, 25-23, capped by a clinching kill by Katzy Randall.
A kill from Ivy started the home team on a 4-0 run early in the second set, giving SFA a 10-7 lead. The advantage grew to 20-12 on a Paige Holland kill before ORU scored nine of the next ten points, including a pair of kills by Fredeen, to tie the set at 21-all. But again it was Stephen F. Austin that closed strong, this time winning the final four points to take the set, 25-21.
A kill by Sabrina Burns sparked an early 3-0 run to give SFA a 10-7 third set lead, and the home team never trailed again. The Ladyjacks scored the final two points of the match, with Ivy and Cara Leslie smacking kills, to win the final set by a 25-22 score.
The win is Stephen F. Austin’s first over the Golden Eagles. ORU had won the previous four meetings between the schools, although the squads hadn’t faced off on the volleyball court since 1984.
ORU returns to the court on Saturday in another match away from Tulsa, this time against Northwestern State. The SLC battle is scheduled for 2 pm CT.
