ORU Downs Lions, 3-1, to Snap Road Skid
The Golden Eagles took the match by scores of 21-25, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-20.
ORU’s middle blockers again put up dominant performances to lead the way. Sheina Fernandes blasted 13 kills and hit .417, while Jessica Pancratz added 12 kills and swung at a .476 clip. Defensively, Bruna Silva led the way with 25 kills and Kylie Johnson tallied 16.
Veronica Turk had 12 kills to lead the Lions, while Megan McMillin added 14 digs.
ORU hit .227 for the match, while the home side hit just .131 on the night.
The Lions (8-13, 3-8 SLC) were the better team in the opening set due in large part to a four-point run midway through the period. A Turk block ended the set with SLU ahead, 18-13, and they went on to win it, 25-21, with Tamra Grayson supplying the clinching kill.
The second set was a tight battle, with a Turk kill tying it up at 16-all. But the Golden Eagles took control, as a Fernandes kill gave the road team a 20-17 advantage. Shelby Robb stretched the lead to 22-18 with a kill of her own, and Gruber smashed a service ace to give ORU a 25-20 win.
Gruber came through at a crucial spot again in the third set, starting a 4-0 run with a kill. The rally gave ORU a 7-3 lead, and Sheera Sirola’s team would hold the edge for the remainder of the period. A kill from Luara Rosa clinched a 25-21 Golden Eagle win.
ORU trailed for much of the fourth set but finally took the lead at 18-17 on a Tatum Fredeen kill. A Gruber kill sparked a late 3-0 run, and consecutive errors by Southeastern on the final two points gave ORU a 25-20 victory. ORU hit .355 in the final set.
Fernandes added a team-high four blocks, while Laura Taylor collected 45 assists along with five kills on just seven attempts.
The win gives ORU a season sweep over the Lions. The Golden Eagles took down Southeastern, 3-1, on September 20 in Tulsa.
Sirola’s club returns to the court on Saturday afternoon when they take on Nicholls State. Match time in Thibodaux, La., is scheduled for 2 pm CT.
