TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts men's soccer season came to an end on Saturday night as the Golden Eagles fell to the Mavericks of Omaha at the Case Soccer Complex, 2-0.
Neither side could get any momentum going as the Golden Eagles and Mavs battled for control much of the first half. Despite the Mavs holding a 7-5 advantage in shots, both squads had two shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.
In the 35th minute, the Golden Eagles had the best opportunity to break the scoreless tie when Cody Lofgren blasted the ball toward the right post from about 25 yards out. Fortunately for the Mavs, keeper Matt Grosey made a nice diving play to his left, getting a fingertip on the ball to knock it away.
Just over ten minutes into the second stanza, the Mavs put the ball in the net to go up 1-0. With 34:51 remaining in the match, Giovanni Giattino was in the right place at the right time, putting in a rebound off a shot from Chava Garcia, that was saved by ORU keeper Ryan Grashik, into the back of the net.
The Golden Eagles had a pair of opportunities to tie the match in the 71st minute on a shot off the foot of Lofgren and a header by Trevor Laffoon. On both instances, Grosey again tipped the ball over the cross bar for saves.
As the match began to come to a close, the Golden Eagles went on the attack and began to turn the momentum in their direction, taking multiple shots and controlling the ball on their end.
However, in the final minute, Grashik was pulled out of goal and moved up to help the Golden Eagles on the attack. Following a shot attempt, the ball skied for a 50-50 ball that was won by Mav defender Mo Salama. He then touched the ball in front of a sprinting Giattino who took a shot just outside the midline, putting the ball in an empty net for his second of the season.
Lofgren led the Golden Eagles with five shots, three on goal, while Casey Cantor and Gerardo Salas each had two shots and one shot on goal. Laffoon's shot in the 71st minute was his lone shot, while Alex and Neville Francis rounded out the Golden Eagles' chances.
Grashik played a great match between the posts for the Golden Eagles, picking up eight saves in the match.
The ORU men finish their season with 4-13 record overall and 2-5 in the Summit League.
