ORU Opens Season with 6-1 Loss to Nicholls
Mechali’s victory came over Damian Despotovski, 2-6, 7-5, 10-5, but ORU (0-1, 0-1 Southland Conference) fell in the other eight contested matches.
The Colonels (1-0, 1-0 SLC) started the day by sweeping three doubles matches.
Roy Knight and James Russell defeated Mechali and Fabian Zierleyn in the opening flight, 8-4, while Despotovski and Dmitry Kozionov took down Parker Allen and Braxton Bates in the second flight, 8-3. The third court also went to Nicholls, with Jeoffrey Noblecourt and Nico Mertens scoring an 8-2 win over Pedro Moreno and Nathaniel Avery.
In singles play, Kozionov topped Zierlyn on the first court, 6-3, 6-3, and Mechali earned the ORU point on court two.
But the final four flights went to Nicholls. Mertens defeated Allen, 6-2, 6-0, and Knight beat Moreno, 6-1, 6-1. Marco Estruega won the fifth flight over Bates, 8-3, and Russell topped Gabriel Kanelopoulos on the sixth court, 6-1, 6-3.
Avery also played a non-counting match, falling to Evan Karatzas, 6-0, 6-0.
The Golden Eagles will finish their season-opening road trip on Saturday afternoon, when they face the University of New Orleans. First serve is scheduled for noon CT.
