Golden Eagles drop second straight heartbreaker at SFA, 2-1
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Oral Roberts baseball squad dropped its second consecutive heartbreaker on Saturday at Stephen F. Austin as the Lumberjacks hit a walk-off double in the tenth to win, 2-1.
Freddy Villalobos started the bottom of the tenth for the Jacks with a single with an infield single. Two batters later, Max Lamantia stepped in and hit a shot to center that reached the wall, giving Villalobos enough time to cross the plate for the game winner.
Nathan Garza earned the loss for the Golden Eagles, entering the game in the bottom of the ninth. He replaced Drew Bowen who went 8.2 innings and only allowed four hits. Bowen also struck out six SFA batters and only allowed one free pass.
ORU falls to 9-20 on the season and 4-4 in conference play. Game three of the series at SFA (14-16, 5-3) is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the eighth. Kevin Cho started the inning with a bunt single and Matt Brandy followed with a single to left. Cho was running on the play and reached third.
Logan Domenico did his job with runners on the corners with a deep fly ball to left to score Cho to get ORU on the board, 1-0.
Domenico had one of a couple great defensive plays for ORU on the afternoon, taking away a hit from Rene Moreda in the bottom of the fourth with a diving catch. In the home half of the seventh, Ricardo Sanchez hit a liner to right field for the second out and Tyler Boss came up throwing to first to double off Freddy Villalobos.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Lumberjacks tied the game with a 2-out hit from their biggest offensive threat, Hunter Dozier. The junior came to the plate with Jordan Camel on second and singled to the right side to score Camel.
Camel started the inning with a single to right-center.
