PINE BLUFF, Ark. - Oral Roberts University swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon in men’s tennis action. With the win, ORU improves to 3-15 on the season.

The victory is the first for ORU over an NCAA Division I opponent since a 4-3 win over Western Illinois on April 16, 2011, a span of 29 matches.

The Golden Eagles had to earn their doubles point with two tight wins. Fabian Zierleyn and Jason Mechali took the featured court, 9-7, over David Gomez and Nicolas Plaza, while Parker Allen and Nathaniel Avery slid past Leonardo Vieira and Kieron Joynes, 8-6, on the second court.

Braxton Bates and Gabriel Kanelopoulos earned a walkover victory on court three.

ORU beat the Golden Lions in straight sets on each singles court. Zierleyn downed Plaza at the top spot, 6-3, 7-5, and Mechali was a 6-3, 6-4 victor over Vieira at the No. 2 spot. Allen handled Joynes on court three, 6-2, 6-1, and Bates won by the same score over Gomez on the fourth court.

Avery and Kanelopoulos also earned points for the Golden Eagles with walkover singles wins.

The undefeated day caps a perfect week for Bates, who also won both his singles and doubles matches against Oklahoma Baptist on Friday.

The Golden Eagles will finish their 2013 campaign on Thursday afternoon, when they travel to Stillwater for a match against Oklahoma State. First serve is scheduled for 3 pm CT.
