Sosnowski Takes Flight at OKC Collegiate Open
Both ORU players lost their opening match in the No. 1 Singles Flight. Fabian Zierleyn fell to Christian Coetzee of Collin County CC, 7-5, 6-3, while Jason Mechali lost to Erik Eldagsen of Cowley County CC, 6-4, 7-5.
Two ORU returners had success in the No. 2 Singles Flight. Parker Allen won his opening match, 7-5, 6-2, over Cowley’s Seth Moore, but he was stopped by Alvaro Martinez of Barton CC in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 6-0. Braxton Bates also won his opener, 6-2, 6-2, over Aramis Azucey of Seminole State CC, but he fell to Martin Bedecarratz of Southeastern Oklahoma State, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
Sosnowski opened the No. 3 draw with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kyle Funk of Collin County, and he followed with a 7-6, 6-0 win over Mitch Vechione of Seminole State. In the semifinals, Sosnowski beat Billy Haugen of Southeastern Oklahoma State, 6-7, 6-2, 10-6, and he took the title with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Alex Brown of Seminole State.
In the No. 4 Singles Draw, Gabriel Kanelopoulos started off with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Austin Canfield of Oklahoma Baptist. One round later, the sophomore fell to Renato Joa of Southeastern Oklahoma State, 6-2, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles also had success in the doubles portion of the tournament. Zierleyn and Mechali went 2-1 in the No. 1 Doubles Flight, advancing to the final match, while Bates and Sosnowski won the consolation flight of No. 2 Doubles. Allen and Cole Guy also participated in the No. 1 Doubles draw, losing their first match.
ORU continues their fall schedule on Saturday, when they face Oklahoma Baptist in an exhibition contest.
