Golden Eagles close regular season with 1-1 draw at IUPUI

Indianapolis, Ind. – Saturday night proved to be a small sample of the 2013 season as the Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team closed its regular season with a 1-1 draw at IUPUI.

ORU (6-7-4, 3-2-1) clinched the two-seed in next weekend’s Summit League Tournament in Macomb, Ill., with the draw, while IUPUI (2-11-5, 2-2-2) received fourth and final seed.

It was the Golden Eagles eighth contest of the season that has gone into overtime as they have accumulated more than 128 extra minutes of action.

On Saturday, the Golden Eagles got on the board first in the 15th minute with the help of the Jaguars as a touch by IUPUI’s Ben Ogedegbe slipped by the IUPUI goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes for an own goal to give ORU a 1-0 lead.

Just before the break, Ayodele Makinde took a shot inside the box that was deflected by an ORU defender, but Patrick Henry was there to clear up the rebound from inside the six to tie the match at one. Makinde was credited with the assist.

After a couple of quick strikes early in the second half that were hauled in by Isaac Sandoval, the Golden Eagles began to control the ball in the attacking half of the pitch. Unfortunately, opportunities by Alex White in the 62nd minute and Matt Rogers in the 69th minute were sent back by Cortes.

Neither squad was able to get a shot on goal in the final 20 minutes of extra-time.

Sandoval (3-2-3) picked up five saves in the draw, while Cortes earned three to move his record to 2-9-5.

White, Matt Rogers and Griffith Poindexter and each had a shot on goal for the Golden Eagles. ORU finished just behind the Jaguars in the shot department as the home team held a 21-19 advantage.

No. 2 ORU will face the Summit League Tournament host No. 3 Western Illinois in the conference semifinals on in match two on tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to face the winner of Friday’s 11 a.m. match between No. 1 Denver and No. 4 IUPUI.

The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 17, at noon.
