LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oral Roberts University men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the indoor season on Saturday at the Bill Timmons Challenge, hosted by Kansas. The Golden Eagles finished the meet with a pair of medals and seven top five finishes.

Leading the way for ORU was senior jumper Tim Jones as he earned gold in the triple jump with a distance of 14.62 meters. It was Jones’ third first place finish of his career.

Jones also performed well in the long jump event, just missing the top five with a 6.92-meter mark.

The top women’s finisher was cross country All-Southland performer Samantha Watson as she recorded a time of 10:36.27 to finish second in the 3000 meter run.

Sophomore David Batchelder had a solid afternoon, placing fourth in the mile run and also anchored the distance medley relay team, which also finished fourth. Batchelder crossed the finish line in the mile with a time of 4:32.60 and combined with teammates Jonathan Harper, Joshua Lee and Cameron Peterson for a time of 11:18.50 in the relay.

In the women’s 800, Erin Roberson crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 2:21.89. A little more than a second separated the second through fourth place finishers in the event.

Rounding out the top five performances for the Golden Eagles was a pair of pole vaulters, Lauren McFarland and Linhchi Lai. The defending Southland Indoor Champion in the same event, McFarland completed the Kansas meet with a mark of 3.65 meters for a fourth place finish.

Lai also finished at the 3.65-meter level, her collegiate best, to earn the fifth place finish in the pole vault.

Coach Joe Dial’s teams will have just over a month before the Golden Eagles return to action when they make a return trip to Kansas on January 10 for the Bill Easton Classic.
