Zierleyn Leads ORU Effort at ITA Central Regional
Leading the way for Mark Milner’s team was sophomore Fabian Zierleyn, who reached the round of 16 in the singles main draw. Zierleyn won his opening match, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, 6-3 over Joe Flanagan of Saint Louis, and he knocked off Dominic Patrick of Iowa in the 2nd round, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The Germany native’s run was halted in the Round of 16, when he fell to the No. 1 overall seed, Dane Webb of Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-0.
Sophomore Jason Mechali was victorious in his 1st round qualifying match, with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 win over Joceyln Devilliers of Wichita State. The South African lost a tough battle in the 2nd round, though, a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Brandon Lee of Creighton.
Freshman Cole Guy lost his opening qualifying match, 6-1, 6-4, to Matthew Hutchinson of SIU-Edwardsville. But Guy came back to win his consolation match, 6-4, 6-3, over Ben Yue of Western Illinois.
Senior Parker Allen lost a tough battle in his opening qualifying match, a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 defeat at the hands of Creighton’s Elliott Baker. Allen then lost his consolation match, 6-3, 7-5, to Jacob Tanulanond of SIU-Edwardsville.
ORU also put two doubles teams in the competition. Mechali and Zierleyn again led the way for the Golden Eagles, topping Chase Tomlins and Andres Estenssoro of Iowa, 8-7 (10-7). In the 2nd round, the ORU duo was eliminated by No. 5 seed Matt Frost and Alen Salibasic of Drake, 8-1.
Meanwhile, Allen and Guy lost their 1st round doubles match, 8-1, to Eric Freuh and Leandro Toledo of Minnesota.
The tournament concludes ORU’s fall season. The Golden Eagles will open spring play in early 2014, with the official schedule to be released at a later date.
