Heartbreak comes upon women’s soccer in opener
TULSA, Okla. - It was a heartbreaking Friday night on the Oral Roberts campus as the Golden Eagle women's soccer team suffers a loss to North Texas in the second extra period of the season opener, 2-1.
The match looked like it was going to end in a 1-1 draw, much like an early season match between the same two teams in 2011. However, Mean Green forward Karla Pineda booted a shot from about 25 yards out for the game winning goal with 7:23 remaining in the second and final overtime period.
All expectations entering the match was it would be a defensive battle. That expectation held true when the clock started as the two teams combined for just ten shots on goal. ORU's Megan Giles and Pineda were the only two with multiple looks at goal.
The scoring got started during the ninth minute of the match when Lauren Parks found Shelbi Lousch in the box from the right side of the pitch for a goal, giving the Golden Eagles an early lead over the defending Sun Belt champions, 1-0.
Megan Giles was also credited with an assists on the opening goal.
The Mean Green tied the contest with a goal off the foot of Kelsey Hodges 20 minutes into the first half.
Picking up the loss in goal for the Golden Eagles was Helen Erb. The keeper finished the contest by stopping four shots.
The Golden Eagles (0-1) travel to Kansas City on Sunday afternoon for a matchup against former conference Missouri-Kansas City. UMKC fell in their season opener as well on Friday at No. 5 Oklahoma State.
