ORU (5-9, 1-2 SLC) scored a milestone victory on Thursday night with a 3-1 triumph over Southeastern Louisiana. The win was the 175th in the head coaching career of Sheera Sirola, and the 100th victory by a Sirola-led club over a conference opponent.
Sheina Fernandes ensured the victory with her finest match of the season, a 16-kill, nine-block masterpiece. The senior hit .483 on the evening and recorded a career-best three solo blocks.
Defensively, junior Bruna Silva held the line with a season-high 32 digs, while Laura Taylor matched her season best with 52 assists.
The Golden Eagles hit .283 for the match and committed just two total attack errors in the match’s final two sets.
Nicholls State (5-7, 2-1 SLC) fell in three sets to Central Arkansas on Thursday, their first conference loss of the season. Reigning SLC Defensive Player of the Week Jessica Addicks led the Colonels with seven kills and three blocks in the loss, while libero Jeanne Logarbo had a team-high 15 digs.
Addicks is one of five SLC players, including ORU’s Fernandes and Jessica Pancratz, to enter the week averaging better than one block per set.
The Golden Eagles are 2-0 all-time against Nicholls State. ORU’s last match against the Colonels was a 3-0 sweep on September 13, 2003. Two-time Mid-Con Offensive Player of the Year Ori Zuzic led ORU with 12 kills in the 2003 victor, while 2004 Mid-Con Defensive Player Becky Dreher had a team-best 18 digs.
Head Coach Patrick Hiltz is in his first season at Nicholls, while ORU's Sirola enters the match with a 175-120 career record.
Following Saturday’s match, ORU will return to SLC play next week with two matches away from Tulsa. The Golden Eagles next take the court on Thursday, September 27, when they face Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. Match time is slated for 6:30 pm CT.
