ORU men rebound in overtime against Jags, 2-1
TULSA, Okla. - Late game heroics by Eastern Illinois was outdone by the home team on Saturday night at the Case Soccer Complex as Oral Roberts men's soccer player Tom Adams beat the keeper in overtime to send home the Jaguars, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles showed resilience in the match after a deflating goal by the Jaguars as regulation came to a close. With just one second remaining on the clock, and the Golden Eagles up, 1-0, EIU's Jake Irwin crossed the ball into the right side of the box, setting up the game tying headed from Nick Smith.
However, the Golden Eagles picked themselves up, starting the extra period strong. With the ball on the Jaguar end of the field, Gerardo Salas took control of the ball, sending it down field in front of a sprinting Tom Adams. The visiting keeper, Evan Turner, came running out of the box, allowing Adams to touch it over his head for the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute.
The game-winner was Adams' fifth goal of the season, and his third in two matches, while Salas was credited with his fifth assist of 2012.
In the 71st minute, Salas broke a scoreless tie, taking a pass from Cody Lofgren in the right corner, placing the ball in the bottom left corner of the net for his first of the season.
The two squads played a fairly even match until late when the Jaguars begin to control the ball on their end of the field, giving them multiple shot opportunities in the final ten minutes of regulation. In the second period, the visitors outshot the Golden Eagles, 15-7, closing the match with an eight advantage, 23-15.
Adams had three shots on goal, out of four total, while Salas and Lofgren each had two shots on goal. Lofgren led the Golden Eagles with a total of five shots.
Picking up the victory in goal for ORU was Ryan Grashik. He recorded a save in his second victory of the year.
The Golden Eagles (3-11-0, 2-3-0) have two conference games remaining, sandwiching a non-conference home match against Newman on Halloween Night. Next Saturday, the Golden Eagles will be on the road at Western Illinois, and close the season on Nov. 3 at home against Omaha.
