ORU Closes Regular Season at Central Arkansas
Live video of Saturday’s game is available on UCASports.com, while radio coverage is free of charge on KYAL-AM 1550 in Tulsa and around the world at ORUGoldenEagles.com.
ORU (15-12, 12-5 Southland Conference) is one game behind Sam Houston State (13-4 SLC) for the top spot in the league standings. The Golden Eagles would need to top UCA on Saturday and have Sam Houston fall to Northwestern State in order to gain a share of the regular season SLC crown.
Because of tiebreaking procedures, the Golden Eagles would need those two results plus a Lamar (11-6 SLC) victory over Southeastern Louisiana and a McNeese State (11-6 SLC) loss to Nicholls State in order to earn the SLC Tournament’s No. 1 seed.
ORU can clinch the No. 2 seed (and the double-bye that comes with it) by beating Central Arkansas on Saturday. If ORU were to lose, the Golden Eagles would need McNeese to lose to Nicholls State to earn the 2nd seed.
The Golden Eagles last played on March 2, a 62-55 win over Lamar. Kevi Luper scored 21 points in the victory, while Taylor Cooper added 16 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
The victory came as a result of another strong defensive effort by the Golden Eagles. ORU held Lamar to 24.6% shooting and improved to 12-1 this season when holding opponents under 60 points.
Central Arkansas (15-13, 8-9 SLC) won an overtime thriller in their last game, 77-69, McNeese State on March 2. Senior Megan Herbert had a monster effort in the victory, earning Southland Player of the Week honors on the strength of a 35-point, 17-rebound explosion.
Herbert, the two-time reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year, leads the lead with 19.5 points per game and ranks second with 11.6 rebounds per game. Junior center Courtney Duever joins Herbert to form the league’s top post tandem, averaging 13.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
UCA Head Coach Sandra Rushing is her her first year at UCA and has a 418-268 record in 24 seasons overall.
ORU's Misti Cussen is 15-12 in her first season in charge of the Golden Eagles.
Oral Roberts is 5-1 all-time against Central Arkansas, with victories in their last five meetings with the Sugar Bears.
ORU bested the Sugar Bears, 76-69, at the Mabee Center on February 19. Luper scored a game-high 33 points, while Duever led UCA with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Oral Roberts is 2-1 in Conway and won their last road contest against UCA, a 73-54 victory on November 24, 2007. Jenny Hardin led the Golden Eagles with 23 points in the win.
The 2013 Southland Conference Tournament begins on Wednesday, March 13 in Katy, Texas. ORU’s opening round date and opponent is still to be determined.
