Golden Eagles drop season finale to Northwestern State, 4-3
NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Oral Roberts University baseball team suffered a tough loss in its season finale as the Golden Eagles fell to Northwestern State on Saturday, 4-3.
The Golden Eagles’ regular season comes to an end with a 23-30 overall record a16-11mark in Southland Conference play, while NWLA finished its season at 16-40 overall and 5-22 in the SLC.
Alec Smith took the loss for the Golden Eagles in just a third of an inning of work. Tim Zufall was called upon to start and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, in three innings on the mound.
ORU jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Demons in the top of the third. Goro started things with a double to left, scoring on a bunt single by Healy. Cho, who also reached on a bunt single earlier in the inning, was driven on as Trevino singled to left.
Trying to throw Healy out at third, the Demon catcher threw the ball back into left field, allowing Healy to cross the plate.
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the Demons knotted the game at three in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double into the right field corner by Matt Burns.
The Demons took the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Jake Clouatre scored on an infield single by Will Watson. Watson and Todd Wallace each finished with two hits in the game.
ORU will take on Stephen F. Austin in the first round of the Southland tournament in Sugarland, Texas, on Wednesday at 9 a.m. The Lumberjacks swept the Golden Eagles in early April in Nacogdoches, Texas.
