TULSA, Okla. – Oral Roberts University had 58 student-athletes named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s 2013 Spring Academic Honor Roll, the league office announced Tuesday.
A total of 850 student-athletes between 13 schools were named to the list that boasts 10 student-athletes of the year, nine players of the year and a total of 154 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages during the spring semester. The honor roll includes student-athletes who took part in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.
Of the 58 Golden Eagles to appear on the honor roll, 12 had a 4.0 GPA during the spring semester. Men’s indoor track and field athlete of the year Jack Whitt, a senior health exercise science major with a 3.40 GPA, led the way for the ORU men. Whitt, a seven-time All-America honoree, finished second in the pole vault at the NCAA National Championship this spring. For the ORU women, eight basketball players on the regular-season and tournament champion Golden Eagles earned a spot on the all-academic team including senior Kevi Luper. Luper, a senior business administration major with a 4.0 GPA, earned first-team all-conference and all-academic honors this season after finishing her career as one of the most prolific players in ORU history.
The Southland Conference Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.
