ORU Announces 2013 Volleyball Schedule
TULSA, Okla. - Head Coach Sheera Sirola and the Oral Roberts University volleyball team are proud to announce their 2013 schedule. The Golden Eagles have 28 regular season matches on the itinerary, beginning on August 30, before they take part in their second Southland Conference Tournament from November 22-24.
ORU will play nine home games in 2013, beginning on Thursday, September 19 against Incarnate Word. Each home match will be held at the Kenneth H. Cooper Aerobics Center on the ORU campus, with Thursday matches beginning at 7 pm CT and Saturday matches beginning at 2 pm CT. Video broadcasts of all home matches will be streamed live at ORUGoldenEagles.com.
The Golden Eagles will start the 2013 season on Friday, August 30, when they open play at the TSU Invitational in Houston, Texas. ORU will battle the hosts from Texas Southern on Friday afternoon in their tournament opener before facing two more SWAC schools, Prairie View A&M and Southern, on Saturday, August 31.
ORU resumes their rivalry with the University of Tulsa on Tuesday, September 3 at the Reynolds Center on the TU campus. The Golden Hurricane edged Sirola’s squad, 3-2, last season at ORU, but the Golden Eagles hold a 59-17 edge in the series.
Oral Roberts had never played Texas Southern in their first 36 years of intercollegiate volleyball, but they will face the Tigers for the second time in eight days when they take part in the El Paso Sports Commission Volleyball Invitational. ORU will face TSU and the hosts from UTEP on Friday, September 6 in El Paso before wrapping up play the next day against another repeat opponent from the week before, Southern.
The Golden Eagles renew hostilities with an old rival when they head to Statesboro, Ga., for the Georgia Southern Invitational on September 13 and 14. ORU will tangle with former Summit League foe North Dakota State on the first day of the event; The Golden Eagles and Bison faced off 12 times as Summit League members from 2007-2011, including the 2008 and 2011 Summit League Championship matches. ORU takes on High Point and host Georgia Southern on the second day of the event.
Both the home and SLC schedules start on Thursday, September 19 against Incarnate Word, and the home stand is capped on Saturday, September 21 against Abilene Christian. Although the Cardinals and Wildcats are transitional NCAA Division I members and will not count toward ORU’s NCAA Tournament résumé, both matches will count as Southland Conference contests.
Sirola’s crew battles a third straight Southland Conference debutante on Thursday, September 26 when they are pitted against New Orleans. Two days after matching up with the Privateers, ORU will take the short trip to Hammond, La., for a match against Southeastern Louisiana.
ORU’s second home stand begins on Thursday, October 3 when Stephen F. Austin visits the Aerobics Center. Two days later, it’s Northwestern State who will make the trek up the hill for a match against the Golden Eagles.
ORU and Central Arkansas staged three classic matches in 2012, including a Southland Tournament Championship match that went in UCA’s favor, and the two sides will meet for the first time on Saturday, October 12 in Conway, Ark. The following week, ORU travels to Nicholls State on Thursday, October 17 and McNeese State on Friday, October 19 to complete a three-game road swing.
The Golden Eagles opened their Cinderella run through the 2012 Southland Conference Tournament with a win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and the Islanders will be out for revenge when they invade the Aerobics Center on Thursday, October 24 for their lone regular season meeting against the Golden Eagles. Two days later, ORU hosts another Southland newcomer when Houston Baptist is in town.
The second of ORU’s two three-game road trips begins on Tuesday, October 29 in Natchitoches, La., against Northwestern State. On Halloween night, the Golden Eagles will face reigning Southland Player of the Year Deveney Wells-Gibson and Sam Houston State, and on Saturday, November 2 the road swing concludes against Lamar.
ORU will get a full week off before hosting Central Arkansas on Saturday, November 9, but following the rematch against the Bears Sirola’s club will hit the road for their final away match, against Stephen F. Austin, on Tuesday, November 12.
The final home stand of the season starts on Thursday, November 14 against Southeastern Louisiana, and the last regular season match of the year is booked for Saturday, November 16 against New Orleans. Prior to the showdown with the Privateers, ORU will honor seniors Sthephanie Mab, Jessica Pancratz, Luara Rosa, Bruna Silva and Laura Taylor.
The 2013 Southland Conference Tournament will be held November 22-24 in Corpus Christi, Texas. ORU entered the tournament as the 6th seed in 2012 but swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State to advance to the Championship match, where they were bested by Central Arkansas.
ORU went 17-15 last season, with an 11-7 Southland mark. Silva was named Southland Conference Libero of the Year, while Taylor was an Honorable Mention All-Southland selection.
