TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team kicks off the 2013 regular season on Friday with a major test as the Golden Eagles travel to face No. 15 Saint Louis Billikens. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.
Following a tough loss in the exhibition opener at SMU, 3-1, the Golden Eagles went on to win their next two matches against John Brown, 1-0, and Northeastern State, 4-1. Five different Golden Eagles recorded goals during that three-match stretch, including Edgardo Mira, Wayne Farmer, Johnny Chavez, Craig Rogers and Matt Rogers.
The Billikens enter the match ranked anywhere between No. 8 to No. 18 in the four major college soccer polls. Soccer America has the veteran SLU squad at No. 8, while CollegeSoccerNews.com ranks them No. 10, the NSCAA/Continental Tire poll lists the Billikens at No. 15 and Top DrawerSoccer.com tabs them at No. 18.
Saint Louis is led by a pair of juniors, Robert Kristo and Anthony Manning. Both players are on the preseason watch list for the Hermann Trophy, given annually to the top college soccer player by the Missouri Athletic Club. Kristo led SLU last season with 11 goals and five assists.
SLU returns all but three of their 46 goals scored from the 2012 season.
The two squads have only met on the pitch one other time as the Billikens pulled off a 5-2 home victory over the Golden Eagles in 2010.
