TULSA, Okla. – For the second time in as many matches, the Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team came from behind with late goals to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 victory over Kansas City on Friday.
ORU improved its record to 2-0, while UMKC (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season.
During the first half of play, the Golden Eagles jumped out to a lead in the 26th minute. Jennifer Abernathy controlled a loose ball and struck it from 25 yards out into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Kangaroos answered in the 33rd minute as Kaely Tott put a perfectly placed cross at the feet of Ellie Chadick to make the game 1-1. Seven minutes into the second period, Tott struck again, this time off a free kick near the left sideline to give UMKC the lead.
Trailing the Kangaroos mid-way though the second half 2-1 the Golden Eagle attack began to pick up the pressure on the visiting defense. Just into the 76th minute of play, Kayla Keller crossed the ball from outside the left post to Megan Giles who fooled the UMKC keeper, allowing her an open shot at the net. It was Giles’ second goal of the season.
Keller wasn’t finished helping out on the goal scoring as she found Jordan Parsons in the box three minutes later for the game-winner.
In the 81st minute, the hero from a week ago, Mary-Kate Halsmer, had an excellent look at goal, but Nina Tzianos made a great diving stop for UMKC.
Junior keeper Helen Erb earned her second victory of the season by making six saves in the match. Tzianos retrieved two for the Kangaroos.
ORU is off until next Friday evening when they host cross-town rival Tulsa. Kickoff against the Golden Hurricane is schedule for 7 p.m. at the Case Soccer Complex.
