TULSA, Okla. – Following a successful 5-2 start to the season, the Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team looks to continue its success as the Golden Eagles kick off conference play on Friday at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time.
The Golden Eagles are seeking to avenge a pair of losses to the Ladyjacks last season. SFA blanked ORU in the 2012 conference opener, 5-0, and knocked the Golden Eagles out of the Southland Conference Tournament in the semifinals, 2-1.
On Sunday, ORU got a golden goal off the foot of Mary-Kate Halsmer to give Golden Eagles a 3-2 victory over Arkansas State. All three ORU goals came with in the final 13 minutes of the match, as Kailey Cox put in a header in the 78th minute and Jennifer Abernathy put in a penalty kick three minutes later.
Abernathy’s goal gave her five on the season, one more than she had in 2012, while Megan Giles, Kayla Keller and Halsmer have each scored three goals. Halsmer’s game-winner was the seventh on her career.
The Ladyjacks enter conference play with a 5-1-1 record held their opponents scoreless in five of their seven matches. Last Friday, SFA pulled off an outstanding victory as they shutout SEC opponent LSU, 4-0. Because of their efforts in the victory, forward Zuri Prince was named SLC Offensive Player of the Week and defender Megan Dunnigan received the defensive honors.
Prior to the beginning of the season, Prince, Dunnigan and Chelsea Raymond were named to the Preseason All-SLC First Team, while Chantal Curry was named to the second team. The Ladyjacks were also picked to retain the SLC crown.
Prince leads the Ladyjacks with three goals and Raymond has scored two this season.
An ORU victory will snap a five-game losing skid against SFA, dating back to 2006. In the first four games of the series, the Golden Eagles outscored the Ladyjacks, 21-0, in four matches.
