Golden Eagles Face UCA in Southland Clash

ORU (13-3, 5-1 SLC) is one week removed from their most difficult loss of the season, a 3-2 setback at the hands of Northwestern State on October 5. The Golden Eagles held a 2-1 lead after three sets before conceding a comeback victory for the first time this season.
Sara Pope led the Golden Eagles with 19 kills in the loss, while Bruna Silva racked up 31 digs.
Despite the loss, several Golden Eagles had career efforts individually. At the setter spot, Laura Taylor dished out a career-high 56 assists, while two Golden Eagles had career highs in kills, as Luara Rosa blasted 15 and Nika Mostahinic added 13.
On the defensive end, two ORU players had season highs, with Kylie Johnson collecting 19 digs and Sthephanie Mab adding 12.
Following back-to-back 30-dig efforts last week, Silva now leads the Southland Conference with 5.16 digs per set. Pope, meanwhile, is the most complete hitter in the league through six weeks, ranking 3rd with 3.65 kills per set and 6th with a .307 hitting percentage.
With the loss to Northwestern State, Oral Roberts is now 5-1 in Southland Conference play, tied for 3rd place with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Golden Eagles trail 6-0 clubs Central Arkansas and Sam Houston State at the outset of the week.
Central Arkansas enters the week with a record of 14-3, including a perfect 3-0 mark in SLC play. The Sugar Bears have won seven consecutive matches, including a 3-1 victory over Northwestern State on October 3 and a 3-0 sweep of Stephen F. Austin on October 5.
UCA swept the Southland Conference’s Volleyball Player of the Week awards this week after sophomore outside hitter Heather Schnars was named SLC Offensive Player of the Week and senior libero Shelbee Berringer was named SLC Defensive Player of the Week.
Schanrs tallied a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs against Northwestern State, and she came back with 16 digs against Stephen F. Austin. For the season, Schanrs leads UCA and ranks 6th in the Southland Conference with 3.32 kills per set.
Berringer averaged 6.29 digs per set last week, including 31 against Northwestern State. For the season, she ranks 4th in the Southland Conference with 4.86 digs per set.
UCA leads the Southland Conference in team hitting percentage, at .267, and opponent’s hitting percentage, at .155. ORU is ranked second in both categories.
Central Arkansas Head Coach David McFatrich sports a 61-23 record in his third season leading the UCA program. ORU’s Sheera Sirola is 200-129 in her 11th season with the Golden Eagles.
Oral Roberts is 5-3 all-time against Central Arkansas but has dropped three of their last four matches with the Sugar Bears, including two losses in three meetings last season.
ORU last played Central Arkansas on November 8, 2012, a 3-1 loss on UCA’s home floor in the Southland Conference Championship match. Among current Golden Eagles, Jessica Pancratz led the way with nine kills, and Silva chipped in 27 digs.
The Golden Eagles continue a three-match road trip on Thursday, October 17, when they face Nicholls State. Match time is booked for 7 pm CT in Thibodaux, La.
