TULSA, Okla.- Albert (A.J.) Owens, Jr., a 6-9, 260-pound forward out of Trinity Christian in Cedar Hill, Texas, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Oral Roberts University men’s basketball team it was announced Wednesday.

Owens is a two-star recruit according to Rivals, and is a two time district champion at Trinity Christian. The son of Marcella Upshaw and Albert Owens, Sr., he is an all-district and all-state selection as well as the team MVP and defensive player of the year for Coach Tim Ferguson.

Off the court, Owens is a member of the National Honor Society, and on the court he averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds per game as a junior.  He has also helped lead his Trinity Christian team to a pair of final fours, going in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

“We are excited about adding A.J. to our team,” said Coach Scott Sutton. “He is a big, skilled center, and I believe he will have a bright future at ORU.”

Owens chose to sign with the Golden Eagles over Stephen F. Austin, Liberty, Sam Houston State, and others.

“I believe ORU will help me improved in all aspects of my life, not just in sports,” said Owens.

ORU will graduate just one scholarship player in Shawn Glover after the 2013-14 season.
