ORU Suffers 5-2 Setback at Sam Houston
The day got off to a good start for the Golden Eagles as they won the doubles point. On the top court, Marizanne Bouwer and Melanie Marlin teamed for an 8-4 victory over Olivia Battye and Natalie Petaia. Haley Martin and Ximena Puentes took the second court by the same margin over Isabella Costa and Karen Martinez.
But winning the doubles point was the highlight of the day for the Golden Eagles, as Sam Houston (2-0, 1-0 SLC) won five of six singles courts. Battye knocked off Martin in the top flight, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and Mortimore stopped Bouwer on court two, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. In the third match, Stevenson was a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 comeback winner over Marlin.
ORU's lone singles victory came in the fourth flight, where Puentes knocked off Petaia, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). But SHSU won the final two matches, as Martinez bested Mairead Cleary, 6-1, 6-1, and Costa trumped Nika Munoz, 6-0, 6-0.
In addition to their loss on Sunday, ORU officially canceled their rescheduled Monday afternoon match against St. Mary's. Thus, the Golden Eagles will next take the court on Saturday, March 8, when they host Northwestern State.
