ORU Tastes Success at Bearkat Invitational

Two Golden Eagles posted winning records in the Singles A Flight. Sophomore Haley Martin went 2-1 on the weekend, advancing to the finals of the top flight. Martin defeated opponents from UTPA and Sam Houston before falling to Seminole’s Helga Pinones-Haltenhoff, 7-5, 6-3, in the final.
Melanie Marlin also went 2-1 in the A Flight. After losing her opening match to SHSU’s Imke Jagau,, Marlin won her second contest over UTPA’s Didi Fatchikova and then dispatched of North Central Texas College’s Cassidy Crawford, 6-4, 6-3 in the Consolation Final.
In the B Singles Flight, Marizanne Bouwer went 1-2. The ORU sophomore lost her opener to an opponent from SHSU before knocking off Nika Juricic of North Central Texas College, 6-3, 6-2. Bouwer fell in the Consolation Final, however, 6-3, 6-2, to Shawnee-Ann Brelsford of Seminole.
All-Summit League selection Tori Dollar finished 3rd in the Singles C Flight. Dollar beat Reegan Greenwood of UTPA, 7-5, 6-3, in the opening round before falling to SHSU’s Tanya Postnikova in the semifinals. But she recovered and trounced Lucie Chrastecka in the 3rd place match, 6-1, 6-1.
Natalia Dollar also played in the C flight, but had her tournament cut short by injury. The freshman lost her opener, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4, to Kayla Stevenson of SHSU before retiring from her final two matches.
Brittney Smith had great success in the Singles D Flight, advancing to the championship match. Smith knocked off opponents from UTPA and North Central Texas College before losing the D Final to Nadia Dubyanskaya of Sam Houston, 6-1, 6-0.
Rachel Scroggs also participated in the D Draw, losing in her opener to Dubyanskaya before knocking off Kaitlin Hillebrand of North Central Texas College, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round. But Scroggs fell in the Consolation Final to Julie Perez of UTPA, 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 in what might have been the tournament’s most exciting match.
Martin and Marlin teamed together in doubles play, where they knocked off a team from UTPA in the opening round of the A Flight . But they fell to squads from Sam Houston and UTPA in their last two pairs matches.
The remaining five Golden Eagles played out of the Doubles B Draw. Tori Dollar and Bouwer had the most success, cruising past a UTPA squad in the opening round before dismissing SHSU’s Maddie Mortimore and Olivia Battye, 8-6, in the semifinals. But the ORU duo was turned back in the finals, 9-8 (7-2), by Stevenson and Jagau.
Scroggs and Natalia Dollar lost their opener, 8-1, to Stevenson and Jagau before retiring because of injury in the final two rounds.
Finally, Smith teamed with Mercedee Swartz of North Central Texas College for doubles play. The duo lost their two completed matches before topping Scroggs and Dollar in the 7th place match by default.
ORU returns five players from the 2012 squad, which went 13-6 and captured the program’s eighth Summit League title. The Golden Eagles begin their first season as Southland Conference members in February.
