ORU Hosts Lady Demons to Close Regular Season

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University will close the 2012 regular season and honor a five-player senior class on Saturday, November 10, when they host Northwestern State University. First serve at the Cooper Aerobics Center on the ORU campus is scheduled for 3 pm CT, and live video is available at ORUGoldenEagles.com.

Prior to Saturday’s match against the Lady Demons, ORU will hold Senior Day ceremonies for Sheina Fernandes, Tatum Fredeen, Joana Gruber, Olivia Ophus and Shelby Robb. The seniors have led ORU to a 6-3 record at the Aerobics Center this season.

ORU (14-14, 10-7 Southland Conference) fell in their last match, a 3-1 setback at the hands of Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night. Gruber led the Golden Eagles with 15 kills, while Fernandes tallied 10 kills and nine total blocks. Bruna Silva led the defensive effort in defeat, with 17 digs.

With the loss, ORU now sits sixth in the Southland Conference standings heading into the season’s final weekend. The Golden Eagles have clinched an SLC Tournament berth and could finish as high as tied for 4th in the league with a win on Saturday.

Northwestern State (20-9, 12-5 SLC) fell to Central Arkansas on Thursday night, 3-0. The Lady Demons hit just .135, and Caiti O’Connell tallied a team-high 11 kills in the loss.

The loss snapped a seven-match winning streak for the Lady Demons.

ORU is 3-1 all-time against Northwestern State. In their last meeting, the Golden Eagles fell into a 2-0 hole and lost to the Lady Demons on September 29, 3-1. Fernandes led ORU with 11 kills, but the team hit just .119. Northwestern State's Stacey DiFrancesco paced all players with 21 kills.

Co-Head Coaches Hugh and Stephanie Hernesman are 42-46 in their third season leading the Northwestern State program. ORU’s Sheera Sirola is 184-125 in her tenth season in charge of the Golden Eagles.

Following the regular season finale, the Golden Eagles will make their first appearance in the eight-team Southland Conference Tournament. ORU will open the event on Friday, November 16 in Conway, Ark., with opponents and start times to be determined.
