ORU Faces Lamar Looking to Reclaim SLC Lead

Oral Roberts (14-12) enters Saturday’s game just off the pace in the battle for the Southland’s top spot, at 11-5 in league play. Lamar and Sam Houston State share the top spot in the league, at 11-4, while McNeese State is right on ORU’s heels, at 10-5.
ORU fell to McNeese, 76-71 on Thursday night in Lake Charles, La. A 19-4 run midway through the contest propelled the Cowgirls to victory, and the Golden Eagles could not rally from a 10-point second half deficit.
Kevi Luper scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the loss, while Sarah Shelton added 17 points and 10 boards.
Point guard Jaci Bigham matched a season-high with 11 assists in defeat, while Taylor Cooper hit several timely shots and finished with 14 points.
ORU forced McNeese into just five turnovers in the loss while giving the ball away 15 times on the night.
McNeese is the first conference opponent to sweep a regular season series from ORU since 2009-10, when IPFW won a pair of games against the Golden Eagles.
Lamar (19-7, 11-4 SLC) moved into a tie for the Southland Conference lead with a 76-53 pounding of Central Arkansas on Thursday night in Beaumont. The Lady Cardinals enter Saturday’s game having won seven of their last eight games.
Senior Kalis Loyd is Lamar’s lone double-figures scorer, at 17.5 points per game, and she averages a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game through 26 contests.
Point guard Gia Ayers leads the club with 104 assists on the season, while Carenn Baylor and Dominique Edwards each average 8.4 points per game.
Lamar Head Coach Larry Tidwell is 125-62 in his sixth season leading the Lady Cardinal program.
ORU's Misti Cussen is 14-12 in her first season at the helm of the Golden Eagle program.
Oral Roberts is 4-4 all-time against the Lady Cardinals, with victories in their last three meetings. ORU has not lost to Lamar since 1993.
ORU routed the Lady Cardinals, 77-48, on January 24 at the Mabee Center. Cooper led all scorers with 20 points, while Shelton hit 8-of-9 field goals and provided 19 points.
Loyd was held to just 11 points in the ORU win.
Oral Roberts is just 1-3 all-time against Lamar in Beaumont but won their last trip to the Montagne Center, 52-50, on December 30, 2004.
ORU will close the regular season on Saturday, March 9 against Central Arkansas. Tipoff in Conway, Ark., is scheduled for 2 pm CT.
