Turner Earns All-American Honors on Day 2 of NCAA Championship
EUGENE, Ore.- Oral Roberts University crowned another All-American on Thursday as Morrie Turner finished tied for 15th overall and earned USTFCCCA second team All-American honors in the long jump. Turner became the second Golden Eagle to earn All-American honors at the meet as Jack Whitt was a first team selection after finishing runner-up in the pole vault yesterday.
Turner’s finish also makes it two years in a row in which ORU has had a long jumper earn outdoor All-American honors, with Clive Chafausipo having done so last year.
After fouling on his first two attempts, Turner put the pressure on himself, leaving him just one more shot to get a countable mark. As he did all season, he rose to the occasion and posted a mark of 24-9.75 (7.56m), just off his all-time best of 25-0.5 (7.63m). Turner finished tied for eighth in his heat and tied for 15th overall.
Jeffery Gibson now holds the last chance for ORU to bring home a national championship in 2013 as he competes in the finals of the 400m hurdles at 6:40 p.m. (Central). The race can be seen on ESPNU, with coverage running from 6:30-9 p.m.
