TULSA, Okla. – Led by junior Samantha Watson on the women’s side, the ORU men’s and women’s cross country teams will start the 2013 season as part of the seven-team Bob Timmons Classic, hosted by the University of Kansas.
The men’s 6k race will begin at 9 a.m. at Rim Rock Farm, while the women take the course for a 5k race at 10 a.m.
Watson is a returning All-Southland Conference performer, and leads a group of four returners, including seniors Erin Roberson and Maisha Mitchell. Mgean Denzin returns for her sophomore season. Local product Abby Hoover (Sapulpa HS) joins the squad for her freshman year. Watson led the team in all seven races last year and was the lone ORU representative at the NCAA Midwest Regional, finishing 110th overall.
On the men’s side, ORU returns the top five runners from last year, including sophomores David Batchelder and Jonathan Harper, who combined to claim first and second in five of the six races. Juniors Leif Peterson, Ryan Masey and Tyler Banks also return.
In addition to ORU and the hosting Jayhawks, UMKC, Park University, Hutchinson CC and Haskell Indian Nations will compete in both the men’s and women’s races. Additionally, Highland CC will field a men’s team while Omaha will compete in the women’s race.
At last year’s Bob Timmons Classic, the ORU women finished as the runners up, while the men finished third as a team.
