TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team vies for its second Summit League victory in as many matches on Saturday when they host Western Illinois at 7 p.m. at the Case Soccer Complex.
ORU (3-5-1, 1-0-0) came from behind in its conference opener on Sept. 29 against Fort Wayne to win in overtime, 2-1. Redshirt freshman Edgardo Mira scored the game-tying goal against the Mastodons with three seconds remaining in regulation. Then in extra time, Matt Rogers cleaned up a loose ball in the box and put it in the back for the net for the golden goal.
Two days later, the Golden Eagles traveled to Houston and were shut out by Houston Baptist, 2-0.
Mira is the only multiple goal scorer for ORU as he has netted three this season, tying him for fourth in the conference. The Golden Eagle defense continues to be the biggest improvement over last season as their 12 goals allowed is fewest in the league.
Western Illinois (3-8-0, 1-1-0) is coming off a pair of victories at Eastern Illinois, 3-1, and Bradley, 4-2. Freshman defender Drew Whalen scored two goals in the victory over Bradley and senior Husref Jupic netted a goal in both wins.
Jupic leads the Summit League with five goals this season, while Diego Lopez is tied with Mira for the fourth most in the conference with three goals. Jupic was named the Summit’s Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, while Mira received the honor the previous week.
In net for the Leathernecks, junior keeper Yves Dietrich has picked up a league-high 50 saves, and is second in the conference with a .718 save percentage. ORU redshirt freshman Ben LaCourse sits atop of the league with a save percentage of .769 and goals against at 12.
The two programs have split the previous four meetings with the Leathernecks coming out on top last season in Macomb, Ill., 2-1. WIU leads the all-time series, 12-6-2.
