Golden Eagles fall on senior night to Denver, 2-0
TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer program suffered a crucial Summit League loss on Saturday night as the Golden Eagles were shutout 2-0 by Denver at the Case Soccer Complex.
Denver (10-3-3, 5-0-0) claimed the regular season Summit League Championship in its first season in the league. The Golden Eagles fell to 6-7-3 overall and 3-2-0 in league play.
ORU isn’t the first team to struggle against the Denver defense as the Pioneers have now gone 498 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal, and they haven’t allowed a goal in a conference match this season.
The Golden Eagle defense was strong throughout the match, but breakdowns in the 54th and 56th minutes proved to be costly.
In the 54th minute, the Pioneers broke a scoreless tie as Jordan Schwietzer sent a through ball to Zach Bolden on the left side of the box. From about 15 yards out, Bolden struck the ball, placing it near the bottom of the right post for the goal.
A minute and a half later, Bolden recorded an assist as he set up Brian Hoyt for the insurance goal from 30 yards out.
Isaac Sandoval fell to 3-2-2 on the season for the Golden Eagles as he picked up four saves in the loss. His counterpart, Oliver Brown, had three saves in the match.
The Golden Eagles will battle for a chance to play opposite of the Pioneers in the Summit League Champions as they travel to Indianapolis, Ind., next Saturday to face IUPUI. Currently, ORU is tied for second with Western Illinois and IUPUI has the fourth and final spot in the tournament.
