ORU Returns Home to Face Veteran-Led Navy
Radio coverage of Friday’s game starts at 6:45 pm CT on the Sports Animal, KYAL-AM 1550 in Tulsa, while a video broadcast is available to ELIve subscribers at ORUGoldenEagles.com.
Oral Roberts (1-2) has not played since November 13, a 91-33 loss to Arkansas. ORU struggled in the defeat, shooting just 28.9% from the field and committing 36 turnovers. Christian Key scored a team-high seven points.
Kaylan Mayberry leads the Golden Eagles in scoring through three games, at 12.3 points per game, while Key is second with an average of 11.7. Sarah Shelton is ORU’s leading rebounder, with 10.3 boards per game, a mark that ranks 3rd in the Southland Conference.
ORU is looking to avoid their first 1-3 start since 2003-04. The Golden Eagles are also searching for their first win of the year over an NCAA Division I team after beating NAIA member USAO, 89-68, in their opener.
Navy (3-1) last played on Tuesday night, a 70-51 victory over Saint Peter’s. Kara Pollinger led the Midshipmen with 21 points in the win, while Jade Geif added 16 points and seven rebounds.
Through four games, Pollinger leads Navy with 13.0 points per game while Geif, the Preseason Patriot League Player of the Year, pulls down a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game.
The Midshipmen are the preseason favorites in the Patriot League after taking the conference’s regular season and tournament championships a season ago. Navy went 21-12 last season and fell to Kentucky, 61-41, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
Navy returns all five starters from last season’s NCAA Tournament club. The Midshipmen also won the Patriot League and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
This is the first ever meeting between Oral Roberts and Navy. The Golden Eagles have also never faced a service academy or a current Patriot League member before Friday night.
Navy is 3-2 against current Southland Conference opponents, most recently beating then-independent Houston Baptist in 2011-12.
The Golden Eagles will take three days off before their next outing, the PSO Mayor’s Cup rivalry game against Tulsa on Tuesday night. Tipoff at the Reynolds Center is booked for 7 pm CT.
