ORU Donates to "Operation Christmas Child"
TULSA, Okla. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Oral Roberts University challenged their teammates and coaches to increase the giving for the annual Operation Christmas Child offering at the end of the fall semester. The student-athletes and coaches responded by more than doubling the amount donated and almost tripling the number of shoeboxes filled with items for underprivileged children around the world in this program sponsored by Samaritan's Purse.
The money was used to purchase items such as pencils, pens, books, sox, shirts, games, toys, combs, and hats. SAAC members and other student-athletes filled nine boxes for girls and eight boxes for boys. This year's offering was also large enough to cover the $7 cost of shipping each box to remote locations around the world. Once the boxes were wrapped and filled, the boxes were taken to a local church which was also participating in the program.
SAAC Advisor Terry Unruh commented "It was so fun to watch our student-athletes shopping for children they will never meet. I kept hearing 'Do you think she will like this?' or "This is cool.' or 'Can we fit a few more things in that box?' Our student-athletes really got into the giving spirit and proved to be very economical shoppers."
