Abernathy named Student-Athlete of the Year; four receive academic honors

TULSA, Okla. – Oral Roberts University senior Jennifer Abernathy highlighted the Southland Conference’s All-Academic teams, earning women’s soccer Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Abernathy was one of four Golden Eagle student-athletes to be honored by the league office. Sophomore Kayla Keller joined Abernathy on the first team, while senior Jordan Parsons and sophomore Ashley Martin were listed on the second team.

Adding to her already lengthy list of accolades, Abernathy posted a 3.75 grade point average, helping her to the Student-Athlete of the Year honors. She netted nine goals and nine assists to lead the Golden Eagles in 2013, helping ORU to a 15-4-1 overall mark and a second place finish in the league. The Broken Arrow, Okla., native was named First Team All-Southland Conference at the completion of the regular season.

To be eligible, student-athletes must be in at least their second year of competition at their institution, and have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

A forward from Tulsa, Keller posted a 3.80 GPA, helping her to All-Academic First Team honors. Keller had a breakout season during her sophomore campaign with eight goals and a pair of assists, and was named to the All-Southland Second Team.

Forward Jordan Parsons finished the season tied for second on the team with Keller as she converted eight goals in her final season. Named to the All-Academic Second Team, Parsons compiled a 3.74 GPA as a biology major.

A native of Shawnee, Okla., Parsons was also named to the All-Southland Second Team in her final season.

Joining Parsons on the All-Academic Second Team was sophomore midfielder Ashley Martin. A nursing major from Tulsa, Martin was just one of three student-athletes on the All-Academic Teams to earn a 4.00 GPA. She netted two goals and recorded two assists in 15 matches played for the Golden Eagles.

Earlier in December, the ORU women’s soccer program was honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a team with the organizations Team Academic Award as the posted a 3.35 GPA as a team.
