CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-With better weather on Tuesday, Oral Roberts improved 25 shots and shot the best round of the tournament with a 297 on Tuesday to finish second in the weather-shortened Islander Classic. Lamar won the event with a two-round score of 616, while ORU finished at 619.
After posting four of five individual scores in the 80s with high winds on Monday, all five Golden Eagles shot 77 or better on Tuesday and the Golden Eagles were one of just two teams to card a sub-300 team score. All five ORU golfers finished in the top 25 for the first time out of the six tournaments during the 2012-13 season.
Alheli Moreno shot a 75 on Tuesday to give her a tournament score of 153 (78-75), tying her for fifth overall. Alejandra Acosta dropped six shots to finish at 154 (80-74), tying for ninth, posting a tournament best 25 pars in two days.
Paola Aviles shot a team-best 73 on Tuesday and jumped into a tie for 11th at 159 (82-73). It was the best round of the short ORU career for the freshman, and also marked her top finish in a tournament. Aviles also led the tournament in par five scoring, playing them to a 4.50 average, (-4) for the tournament and carding two eagles.
Tiffany Robbins (82-77) and Shinwoo Lee (84-75) tied for 21st overall after posting identical 159s for the tournament. Like Aviles, Robbins also used the longer holes to her advantage, earning an eagle and scoring 4.63 (-3) on the par 5 holes, the second best in the field.
ORU returns to the course on Sunday as they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C. for the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic.
