TULSA, Okla. - After starting its regular season off with seven consecutive road matches, the Oral Roberts men' s soccer squad returns to the Case Soccer Complex Saturday evening for a conference showdown with Oakland.
Scheduled as both the home and conference opener this season, the Summit League battle between the Golden Eagles and the Golden Grizzlies is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Golden Grizzlies (3-3) and the Golden Eagles (1-6) were picked by the conference coaches to finish third and fourth, respectively. The three victories for the team from Michigan came in their first three contests of the year against New Hampshire (3-0), Cleveland State (1-0) and Vermont (1-0).
However, in their three losses leading into Saturday's match, the Golden Grizzlies have allowed an average of 2.5 goals, including seven in a loss to No. 23 Tulsa on Sept. 16 at the SMU Classic, 7-5.
ORU picked up its first victory in Colorado this past Friday, defeating Air Force in overtime, 1-0. Craig Rogers, the only multiple goal scorer for the squad, put the ball in net just three minutes into the extra period for his second goal of the season.
Despite losing three all-conference players from a year ago, the Golden Grizzlies defense is anchored by senior John Timm who was a 2011 First Team All-Summit League selection. On the offensive side, they have four goal scorers that have put the ball in the net two or more times, led by Miche'le Lipari.
The Golden Eagles won the 2011 matchup between the two squads at Oakland, which proved to be the difference between a tie for second place and fourth place at the end of the conference schedule.
