TULSA, Okla. – With the recent success of the Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team, two Golden Eagles have been recognized with individual honors as Edgardo Mira was named Offensive Player of the Week and Ben LaCourse received the Defensive Player of the Week award from the Summit League on Monday.
ORU (3-4-1, 1-0) won a pair of games during the eligible week, including a 1-0 victory over Missouri State last Monday, as well as a 2-1 overtime conference win over Fort Wayne on Sunday.
Mira, a redshirt freshman from San Salvador, El Salvador, played a key role in both victories. Against Missouri State, Mira put in the lone goal in the 57th minute. On Sunday, Mira was called upon for a penalty kick with five seconds remaining with ORU trailing IPFW, 1-0. The PK was knocked down, but Mira followed it up with the equalizer to send the match into overtime.
LaCourse, a native of Tulsa, Okla., earned victories in goal against MSU and IPFW. The redshirt freshman recorded five saves in the shutout against MSU, while sending back seven in the overtime victory.
LaCourse shared the defensive honor with defender Felipe da Silva of Omaha.
It is just the third time since ORU joined the league in 1997 that two Golden Eagles have received honors in the same week. Dave Leaung (offensive) and Tony Quartuccio (defensive) did so in October of 2004, while Juan Chang (offensive) and Carlos Veron received the honors in September of 2006.
The Golden Eagles are on the road Tuesday at Houston Baptist for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
