INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-The Golden Eagles (5-9-1, 2-2-1 Summit League) win a crucial conference game over IUPUI (6-9-2, 2-2-1) as they look to earn a berth in the conference postseason tournament.
The Golden Eagles defeated the Jags 3-1 thanks to goals from freshman Paul Oliver, Elias Smirlis and Aaron Birk. Freshman Nick Petolick played all 90 minutes and allowed one goal and collected six saves for ORU, while IUPUI keeper Tyler Keever allowed three goals and had just one save in 90 minutes. The love goal for the Jags came from Yogi Snyder. IUPUI outshot ORU 19-9.
Oliver was given a red card in the 58th minute and ejected from the match. He will be suspended for the Golden Eagles next match. Joshio Sandoval for IUPUI was also issued a red card in the 81st minute.
Oliver got the Golden Eagles on the board in the first half with an unassisted goal In the 37th minute from 20 yards out. It was his first goal of his career. Snider answered back for IUPUI in the 42nd minute with his first goal of the season, knotting the game 1-1 at halftime.
The second half began with Smirlis scoring his first career goal in the 51st minute to give ORU the 2-1 lead. The goal, which was assisted by freshman Marco Hernandez, would prove to be the game winner. Birk's goal in the 88th minute made the score 3-1 and was his fifth of the season. The assist was awarded to freshman J.D. James.
The Golden Eagles control their own destiny as they finish off the season with a home game against Western Illinois on November 5 to decide their postseason fate. They are back in action on October 31 against Bradley on the road.
