Oklahoma Wesleyan tops ORU men, 6-2
TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts men's soccer team won the battle on the score sheet on Tuesday evening, but came out on the losing end of the scoreboard, as the Golden Eagles fell to the No. 8 team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Oklahoma Wesleyan, 6-2.
ORU falls to 2-11 on the season following the non-conference loss. They hope to jump start the remaining Summit League schedule with a victory on Saturday evening at the Case Soccer Complex as they host Eastern Illinois.
When play ended against the team from neighboring Washington County on Tuesday evening, the Golden Eagles held a 17-12 shot advantage over OKWU, outshooting the visitors by eight in the second 45 minutes, 11-3. Tom Adams picked up both of the Golden Eagles goals, tying with Cody Lofgren and Alexander Mackie for the team high with three shots.
Looking up at OKWU in the second half, both of Adams' goals were scored a little over five minutes apart, and were both assisted by Lofgren. On the first goal in the 63rd minute, Lofgren set up Adams with a pass off left post for an easy goal past the OKWU keeper Ryan Mcentee.
The second goal for Adams in the 68th minute looked like much of the same with Lofgren perfectly setting up the goal at the feet of a sprinting Adams in the box.
Adams now has four goals to lead the Golden Eagles in 2012, while Lofgren recorded his first two assists of the season.
The Eagles from Oklahoma Wesleyan had a first half most teams have only dreamed off. They finished five of nine total shots in the first 45 minutes of play, three of which were assisted by Lucas Cordeiro.
Cordeiro finished the match with four assists, adding one on the final goal of the evening in the 86th minute, touching a ball over the ORU keeper, Ryan Grashik, setting up Roberto Gallegos for an open goal.
OKWU put a pair of quick goals together to get the scoring off in the 12th and 13th minutes, both off the foot of Jack McGowan. The first goal for McGowan came on a pass from the right side of the pitch on a breakaway, and his second and 15th goal of the season came as Brandon Disney set him up in the middle of the box.
In the 23rd minute, the Eagles again showed their strength, this time on a free kick from Ivan Ristic from 40 yards out, just off the left post.
The final two goals of the first half were each scored by Andres Gacharna. His teammates Cordeiro and Lucas Almeida put on an exhibition on his first goal with a couple of touch passes to an breaking Gacharna in the box. Four minutes later, Gacharna finished another touch pass to the middle of the box from Cordeiro.
