Golden Eagles drop exhibition opener at SMU, 3-1
DALLAS, Texas – The exhibition portion of the 2013 Oral Roberts University men’s soccer schedule got started on Sunday evening in Dallas as the Golden Eagles suffered a loss at the hands of SMU, the 2012 Conference USA champions, 3-1.
ORU trailed the Mustangs 1-0 after the first half of play, but the Golden Eagles quickly tied the game less than three minutes into the second stanza as sophomore midfield Edgardo Mira put the ball in the back of the net from 20 yards out. Unfortunately, the home team quickly answered just 38 seconds later with a goal from John Lujano.
In the 56th minute, ORU had another opportunity off the foot of Alex White, but last season’s C-USA Co-Player of the Year, Jaime Ibarra, knocked it away for the save.
For the game, the Golden Eagles had three shots on goal, with the third coming in the 72nd minute from Gerardo Salas that was saved by backup Mustang keeper Caleb Underwood.
SMU’s Will Smith added the insurance goal with nine minutes remaining the contest, assisted by Edu Aranda and Nicholas Petrucelli.
Transfer keeper Ben LaCourse started the match between the posts for the Golden Eagles as he recorded a save and allowed a goal during the first half. Isaac Sandoval was called upon in the second half of action and added a pair of saves.
The Golden Eagles make their first appearance of the season at the Case Soccer Complex on Tuesday evening with an exhibition match against John Brown. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 6 p.m.
