TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team looks to avenge and early season loss as the Golden Eagles travel to take on Houston Baptist on Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
HBU spoiled ORU’s regular season home opener back on September 2. The match went into double-overtime before Gustavo Alvarado took a shot from just outside the penalty area that deflected off a Golden Eagle defender into the net for the game-winner. HBU’s freshman forward Tobenna Uzo started the scoring with a goal in the 15th minute and Clive Chafausipo added his lone goal this season so for in the 66th minute.
The Golden Eagles (3-4-1, 1-0-0) enter the Tuesday’s match riding a four-game unbeaten streak as they have won the last three. On Wednesday, ORU knocked off Missouri State, 1-0, on an Edgardo Mira goal. The Golden Eagles followed that performance up with a 2-1 conference win against Fort Wayne. Mira scored the game-tying goal with three seconds remaining and Matt Rogers picked up the game-winner in the 91st minute.
For their efforts in the victories, Mira was named the Summit League Offensive Player of the Week, while goalkeeper Ben LaCourse shared the Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Mira leads the Golden Eagle attack with three goals this season, which is tied for second in the conference. Between the posts, LaCourse has recorded 39 saves, second-most in the conference, and he is the league leader in save percentage (.796) and goals against average (1.19).
HBU (4-2) has been idle since September 22 after earning three straight victories, including a victory over Summit League member IUPUI to start the streak. On September 20, they topped LIU-Brooklyn in a 2-1 win, followed by a 3-2 overtime win over Army at West Point.
Uzo leads the Huskies’ offensive efforts, as well as the Western Athletic Conference, with five goals this season. Defender Kyle Herbison is second on the team with two goals, both of which came against Army, and he leads the squad with three assists, second most in the WAC.
ORU is looking to snap a four-game skid against the Huskies. The only Golden Eagle win in the five-game series came back in 2009.
