ORU to face WIU in conference semifinals on Friday
TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University men’s soccer team looks to continue its resurgent season on Friday as the Golden Eagles are set to take on Western Illinois in the Summit League Championship semifinals. Kickoff in Macomb, Ill., is set for 2 p.m.
ORU (6-7-4) finished the regular season as the Summit League runner-up with a 3-2-1 conference mark, while the Leathernecks of WIU (5-12-0) enter the championship tournament as the three-seed after a 3-3-0 league output. The Golden Eagle finish is the program’s highest regular season finish since 2005.
Regular season champion Denver will face four-seed IUPUI in the early game at 11 a.m. The winner of each match will face off on Sunday at noon.
The Golden Eagles blanked the Leathernecks, 2-0, on October 12 at home behind early goals from Marco Hernandez and Johnny Chavez. Hernandez was also credited with an assist on Chavez’s goal, helping him win the Summit’s Offensive Player of the Week honors on October 14.
Heading into Friday’s match, junior goalkeeper Isaac Sandoval is 11th in the NCAA and leads the conference in save percentage at .846. Sandoval also leads the league in goals against average, and ranks 29th nationally, at .762. He has allowed just seven goals in nine matches this season.
After starting the season 0-4, the Golden Eagles finished the regular season 6-2-4.
