This is the 11th of 15 editions of the Top Moments from 2012-13 as selected by the ORU Media Relations Department and a social media poll.

TULSA, Okla. – Every athlete’s goal is to peak at the end of the season when it matters the most. Oral Roberts University’s Jeffery Gibson did just that and snapped a 30-year-old Bahamian national record, qualifying for the world championship and becoming an All-American in the 400-meter hurdles.

By virtue of winning the 400m hurdle event at the Bahamas National Championships, Gibson earned a spot on the national team and will represent the Bahamas at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow in August.

Already the school record holder at 49.83 seconds, Gibson entered the NCAA Preliminary Rounds off a Southland Conference Championship. After cruising to a victory the first round, Gibson knew that a trip to Eugene, Ore., was on the line in the quarterfinals. Gibson blew away the competition, running 49.80 to post the fastest qualifying time of any of the 16 runners to earn a spot in the semifinals.

Gibson went on to make the finals, and despite not having a favorable lane, ran 49.39 in the finals to finish fifth in the nation, breaking a mark that had stood in the Bahamas since Greg Rolle ran 49.46 in the event in 1983.

“What a performance,” said Coach Joe Dial. “We couldn’t be happier with the way Jeffery competed in Eugene. He instantly became a national hero back home.”

Gibson’s fifth place finish, along with Jack Whitt’s runner-up in the pole vault, and Morrie Turner’s 15th place finish in the long jump gave ORU 12 team points and ORU finished 20th in the nation, just ahead of Ohio State. The finish was the highest by any Oklahoma school (OU 37th, OSU 65th, TU N/A)
