Gibson, Whitt start strong at Kansas event
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Jeffery Gibson and Jack Whitt led the Oral Roberts men's and women's track teams on Thursday evening as they opened their indoor schedule at the 2012 Bob Timmons Challenge, hosted by Kansas.
Gibson walked away from the meet with his first victory of the season in 400 meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 47.92. The senior won the race easily, topping the second place finisher, Michael Ashley of Lincoln, by 1.16 seconds.
A fellow senior, Whitt's final campaign starts strong; reaching a height of 5.35 meters in the pole vault, while Golden Eagle Dustin Gehrke finished came completed his portion of the event with a height of 5.20 for the third place spot.
Leading the way on the women's side of the 2012-13 opener was Marrisa Thomas in the 800 meter. Thomas came in just behind the event winner Bethany Scott, who was running unattached, with a time of 2:22.91.
Picking up third place finishes for the women was Madison Reynolds in the 400 meter dash, running a 56.31 time, and freshman Daniella Szabo brings home third in the women's pole vault at 3.70 meters. Teammate Lauren McFarland also recorded an official height of 3.70 in the same event, finishing fourth.
Sophomore runner Tyler Banks was a part of two third place finishes on the evening, doing so on an individual basis in the one mile run with a time of 4:34.42, and joining John Bradford, Mulando Njeleka and Gibson in the 4x400 relay.
Rounding out the ORU top three finishers on Thursday evening is Tim Jones who jumped 14.17 meters in the men's triple jump.
The Bob Timmons Challenge was the lone fall semester meet for the Golden Eagle squads, as they restart their indoor schedule on Jan. 9 and 10 in Wichita for the Herm Wilson Classic.
