Gibson Blows Away the Field at NCAA West Region
AUSTIN, Texas – Despite rain in the area that delayed the entire meet, Oral Roberts University senior Jeffery Gibson blew away the competition, breaking his own school record to earn a trip to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA National Championship.
Gibson finished his 400m hurdle heat in 49.80, breaking his school record and running the fastest qualifying time in either of the two regions. He will enter the semifinals in Eugene with the top lane placement. Gibson is the second Golden Eagle to earn the trip after Morrie Turner punched his ticket in the long jump on Thursday.
The other ORU competitor, pole vaulter Lauren McFarland, cleared the bar on her opening jump at 3.71m before having to sit through a nearly seven hour rain delay before getting back on the runway. She cleared 12-8.0 (3.86m) on her third and final attempt and bowed out after clipping the bar on her way down at 4.01m. Tied for 18th with her height, McFarland took 25th based on misses.
