JONESBORO, Ark.-The Oral Roberts men's golf team saved its best round for last, shooting a 292 in the final round of the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club, moving up into a tie for 11th out of 22 teams. The Golden Eagles shot an 885 (297, 296, 292) for the tournament, finishing at +33 with their lowest team score since shooting 863 at the Jackrabbit Invitational on March 12.
UALR won the event with an outstanding -10 (274) in the final round, finishing with a three-round total of 848.
Scott Newell continued to lead the way with a 73 in the final round. Newell shot 217 (+4) for the tournament after a pair of 72's yesterday and tied for 19th overall. It is the first time this season in which Newell has been the top finisher for ORU, and marks the fifth time in as many tournaments that a different player has led the squad (McInroe, Allen, Spencer, Holtgrewe, Newell).
Jake Spencer shot an even-par 71 in the final round, moving up into a tie for 29th with a three-round total of 219 (72-76-71, +6), while David Holtgrewe's 75 on Tuesday put him at 220 for the tournament and tied for 40th (75-70-75, +7).
After shooting a pair of 78's on Monday, Trevor McInroe shot 75 on Tuesday to finish his tournament with a 231 (78-78-75, +18), tied for 91st. Bryan Boaz rounded out the team players with a 73, his best round of the tournament, giving him a 232 tournament score (78-81-73, +19), tying him for 94th overall.
Shannon Allen finished with a 216 (76-69-71,+3) after an even-par 71 on Tuesday. Allen was the second highest individual finisher, with Will Snipes from Vanderbilt tying medalist honors. Allen tied for 15th in the tournament.
The Golden Eagles will travel to Columbia, Mo., for the 2012 COG-Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate on April 9-10. It will serve as the final tune up before the 2012 Summit League Conference Championship on April 16-17.
