HUNTSVILLE, Texas-Places 2-6 were all decided by less than 10 strokes and the Oral Roberts University men’s golf team grabbed third overall at the Harold Funston Invitational, hosted by Sam Houston State.
The Bearkats won the tournament easily with a three-round score of 845 (276-283-286) and Abilene Christian took second at 869 (293-280-296). The Golden Eagles closed the gap on the Wildcats but finished three shots back at 872 (288-292-292).
Scott Newell finished off a terrific tournament with a 67, the best round on a par-71 course by an ORU golfer since David Holtgrewe did it at the 2012 Summit League Championship. Newell took third overall at 208 (69-72-67), matching his career low 54-hole total from the same Summit League Championship.
Spencer Sheets tied for 20th overall at 221 (74-71-76), while Anthony Skirk tied for 24th, one shot back at 222 (73-75-74). David Holtgrewe finished the tournament with a 224 (72-76-76) to finish 28th, and Josh Bernard snuck into a tie for 29th at 226 (77-74-75).
The Harold Funston Invitational kicked off a three-week stretch of competition for the ORU men, who will continue at the 2013 Bill Ross Intercollegiate in Kansas City October 14-15. The fall schedule will conclude with the 2013 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in New Mexico October 21-22.
