Western Illinois Slides Past ORU, 5-2

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University won the top two singles courts but could not hold off Western Illinois University in a 5-2 loss on Sunday night at the Grand Health & Racquet Club. The loss drops ORU to 0-3.

The highlights of the match for the Golden Eagles came on the top two singles courts, where Fabian Zierleyn and Jason Mechali were able to earn victories. Zierleyn took down Christoph Haertel on the featured court, 3-6, 7-6, 10-6, and Mechali won the first set off of Patrick Hammers, 7-5, before Hammers retired on court two.

Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, Western Illinois (2-3) took the doubles point and each of the final four singles matches.

The Leathernecks grabbed the pairs victory with close wins on the bottom two courts, starting with a victory from Haertel and Bradley Holt in the second flight, 8-4, over Parker Allen and Braxton Bates. Mitch Granger and Brandon Meeker clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Pedro Moreno and Nathaniel Avery in the third flight.

Each of the bottom four courts went to WIU in straight sets. Holt got past Allen on the third court, 6-1, 6-4, and Ben Yue won the fourth flight over Moreno, 6-4, 6-1.

On the fifth court, Granger scored a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Bates, and Max Cedarkall took down Gabriel Kanelopoulos at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-0.

ORU returns to action on Saturday, February 2, when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for a neutral site match with Army. First serve is booked for 12 pm CT.
